Hamming it up...

Saturday there was not a cloud to be seen from Jay Peak, VT. Temps were in the 40’s, direct sun - probably 50’s. No wind. Perfect spring skiing. This season Jay Peak has recorded 326” of snow. That’s more than 27 feet, which is actually pretty standard for the East’s powder headquarters. All of it was on exhibit this Easter weekend.

The resort was hoping. The ideal conditions and weather put perma smiles on everyone’s faces. Spring has arrived and its first official weekend is a perfect ten! The restaurants and lodges were packed, everyone in high spirits. Jay Peak = Good Times, Great Skiing!

Safe assumption that Saturday was the resort’s busiest day this season in terms of skier visits. There were moderate lift lines, but who really cared, it was brilliant outside. Besides big intersections, the slopes did not feel crowded. Jay has trees for all ability levels, everywhere. Once you start looking for them (the best snow is in there) you can go anywhere. The woods really disperse the traffic, providing hundreds of skiable acres that are not on the trail map.

The Belfry: Friday night at approximately 9:32 PM. The owner, Chantal (not sure on the sp.), relieves the bartender. She has been in Montgomery VT working/owning the place for 30+ years. She can barely speak, sounds like she had been using hear outside voice a lot recently. Acer orders a Budweiser Bottle. Chantal rips off the cap with her teeth, and then spits it at the Guru. Fantastic! She was quick to join us on the right side of the bar for some laughs.

Chair Lift Chatter: All about the West Bowl. The proposed terrain expansion has been a back country stash for years. Word around the resort is they are pushing to get some marked skiing over there as early as next season. Heard that The Big Wigs were showing it off to some prominent buyer type folks, rumor is there is a road up from the new golf course. No lift next year, but a little traversing will get you to and fro. It is certainly something to keep an eye on during the off season.

First: I can not think of another ski area that has names and numbers of trails on both the map and the mountain signage. Makes Sense.

Never been to Jay Peak? Move it up on your list of priorities.

Hope you got some turns in this weekend.
