Ski Guru Special: Chairlifts are Spinning!
Weathered last week’s rain? Not all, but the big boys certainly did, and the reports are that the skiing, even now, is of high-quality! Granted the conditions are spring like, but that is no reason to turn up your nose just yet. Check Snow Country to see if your favorite is still in the game and when they may plan on shutting it down.

Skiing on Grass
No quite yet, but getting there hastily. A friend from Jay Peak told me that her basement flooded yesterday. Jim is writing about "detrimental" rains across New England. All is not lost thanks to a huge four weeks of snow from mid Feb – early March.
Or go for a plane ride...

Spring Skiing: The Big 2
True: March is the best month the ski. The sun grows stronger daily, tiz the season’s snowiest month, then April arrives and the melt is on. Corn and Bumps are the Rule. Afternoons are what you came for. Stay up late reveling, sleep in for a while & then rip around in the soft snow. Repeat…

Irish Eyes are Smiling!
And so are the eyes of all skiers and riders in the North East. Here we are, six days away from the official start of spring, which is set up to be the best we have seen in several years here in New England. Old Man Winter and Mother Nature teamed up over the past month and gave us as good of ski weather as we have seen in a long time. If you have been procrastinating, waiting for the frigid air to back out, now is your time.

ESWA & Getting Spooked
The Eastern Ski Writers March meeting was at Sunday River this weekend. After missing the last two due to prior commitments I made it a point to be in attendance. Dozens of friends & skiers form the corporate and media sides of the industry + awesome accommodations (Jordan Grand) + a weekend loaded with events (races, first tracks, pub crawl, snow tubing, diners, etc…) = Good Times!

Going to NH!
After seeing the resorts/areas around Mount Washington report 10-15 inches of fresh snow on Tuesday morning the Guru’s periscope went up and turned toward the East. The new snowfall pushed the operations at Attitash, Black, Bretton Woods, Cannon, Loon, Pats Peak and Wildcat to 100% of their terrain, or very close.

Storm Chatter & Stratton, VT
Sitting right in the sweet spot for this snowstorm Stratton is priming the pumps for a huge weekend. The tallest peak in Southern Vermont will often generate its own climate. Averaging a solid 40 more inches per season than its neighbors in the Golden Triangle, coupled with a top-notch snowmaking/grooming operations and the resort becomes a sure thing. Guru prediction, Stratton is a lock for 25” on the ground by Friday - noontime.

Mr. Whiteface to you...
MLK Jr. Day is this Monday 1/17/05, and you’re staring down the barrel of a three-day weekend. No plans locked in yet, try something new. Whiteface! Sure, I know your thinking it is a little extra windshield time (4.5 hours from the hub on a good day), but you also have an extra day on the slopes ahead of you. Plus, the resort is in New York, which means the bars and pubs (they have a ton of nightlife in Lake Placid) will still be thumping even if you pull into town in the wee hours of the morning.

Wildcat Mountain, NH
12/27/04: After receiving 10-14 inches of new snow through Sunday into Monday Morning it was no surprise to see an email from a friend at Wildcat Mountain in my inbox. The mountain is a year-round, family-owned business, located on 100% National Forest land in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest in Pinkham Notch, NH.

Rocking the New Year in the East!
Wednesday, 12/22/04 – Winter, officially! If you are anything like me you still have shopping to accomplish and you also have no idea what you are going to do a week or so from now for the big bash, New Years Eve. That’s why you need to keep reading, herein lie some of what’s happening up in the mountains to ring on 2005 the right way.
The good news, most major snowmaking operations have been online now for the better part of two weeks. Resorts are really starting to expand their terrain options, pretty much everything you can put a gun to will be skiing and riding during the holiday season. Better yet a handful of areas up North are loaded with real good natural snow, check Snow Country for your favorite.

Powder to some People.
Received an email from the Vail Mountain Communications Manager. It howled of huge, early season POWDER. The equation: 3+ feet during the past 5 days = 1,105 open acres of powder serviced by 12 lifts.
There was even a picture attached that was taken the morning of 11/29/04 at Vail…

Upcoming events
Search the snocountry site anytime for what's happening on the mountains -- you can search by resort or date. SnoCountry
The biggest Event news going right now in the Northeast is OPENING DAY! Over the next month or so the list of areas/resorts that start spinning the lifts will be growing quickly. Check SnoCountry to find out when your favorite spot plans to begin operations.
First to open in the East: Killington was the first to arrive at party, getting things started on Tuesday morning November 9th at 9:00 AM. Woodbury Ski Area in CT, which actually took the title from Killington last season, made a valiant bid to defend and opened on the 9th as well, but not until 2:00 PM. Bretton Woods, NH and Sunday River, ME were close seconds; both opened their 04/05 campaigns on Wednesday November 10th.
Here are some things to do before your favorite resort opens this season.
1. Go to the Boston Globe Snow Sports Expo, November 18-21. Click the website below for more information and an online coupon you can print out to discount your admission. This annual event is not to be missed. You will find great deals on gear and clothes, plus tons of industry companies and mountains from all over the world, professional athletes and opportunities abound to enter contests. Go to gather information and free schwag from your favorite resorts. Also, if you are of the legal drinking age you can do all this with a beer in hand! http://www.onthesnow.com/bewi/boston/boston.shtml
2. Catch a movie to get fired up. The three big guns are back again this year with new flicks and they will all be making stops near you. First, Warren Miller, the standard in mountain cinematography, will be at it again this year with IMPACT. The website has a full schedule so you can find out where and when it will be in a theater near your home. www.warrenmiller.com. Second, Teton Gravity Research is still making people gasp out loud with their new release, SOUL PURPOSE. www.tetongravity.com. A third option, Matchstick Productions, YEARBOOK, is a little more off the cuff for the younger and crazier crowd. www.skimovie.com
3. Get your snow tires on your vehicle and your ride tuned up for the cold winter months. Take it from the Ski Guru, who has been unfortunate enough to total a car in a blizzard on 89 in NH, right by Whaleback. I had snow tires in my garage at home instead of on the wheels and that still bothers me. Always be prepared and always drive safely.
