If you are interested in learning more about how to manage fear on the slopes, here is a list of books that may be helpful. Also, many ski resorts have instructors who specialize in that area. Ask for someone who has been trained as a ''fear clinician" to make clear what you are aiming to get out of the lesson.

''In the Yikes! Zone: A Conversation With Fear" by Mermer Blakeslee (Dutton, 2002).

''Inner Skiing" by W. Timothy Gallwey and Robert Kriegel (Random House, 1977 and 1997).

''Smart Skiing: Mental Training for All Ages and Levels of Skill" by Dennis J. Selder (Jossey-Bass, 1998).

''Women Ski" by Claudia Carbone (World Leisure, 1996). Includes segments written by Blakeslee and Ashley Fischer.

''The Winner's Way: A Proven Method for Achieving Your Personal Best in Any Situation" by Pam Brill (McGraw-Hill, 2004).
