Five New Reasons To Visit The Big Apple
Source: AAA Southern New England
Even if you've been to New York City before, here are five great new reasons to return!
Along the trail, visit the New York Historical Society (2 W. 77th St., 212/873-3400, www.nyhistory.org) to see the exhibition, "Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America." From July 2 to 18, the Society will mount "The Duel" (featuring dueling pistols and portraits of the combatants) to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the fateful duel in which Aaron Burr killed Hamilton. One of the most famous paintings of any politicians is also here: Gilbert Stuart's classic portrait of George Washington.
2. Tour the Mayor's Home, Gracie Mansion
Open Wednesdays by appointment. The Federal-style mansion is notable for its three-sided porch and for the trellis railings that sweep around the house at the second-story and attic levels. In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the City. Gracie, a prominent member of New York society, staged elegant parties that attracted noteworthy guests such as Louis Philippe, later King of France; President Josiah Adams; Alexander Hamilton; Washington Irving; and Rufus King, ambassador to Britain.
