Source: AAA Southern New England
You know Freeport, ME is famous for shopping, but did you know all these fun facts?

1. Folklore credits Freeport as the birthplace of Maine. Maine's separation from Massachusetts was final in 1820.

2. July through October is considered peak season in Freeport. Lodging values can be found right now, during May and into June. For the ultimate bargain, plan your weekend away between November and April. You'll be able to channel the money you save on lodging toward your shopping spree.

3. Freeport has its own 100% certified desert. The Desert of Maine is an area of sand dunes that has grown since the early 1900s. What was once the Tuttle Farm is now an area of moving sand dunes, some more than 70 feet high and covering trees and a small building. In 1897 the topsoil began to erode exposing the ancient glacial plain.

4. 100 years ago you could have stayed at the Casco Castle Hotel and enjoyed the adjacent Amusement Park. Like so many other turn of the century coastal resorts, fire stole the hotel away from us. Learn more about Freeport history by visiting the Harrington House, home to the Freeport Historical Society.

5. Plan ahead. Freeport's 12th Annual "Sparkle" event kicks off December 2, 2005. The Main Street Magic Parade of Lights is set for Friday night, 50 tubas fill the air with holiday music on Saturday, December 3 at the Tuba Christmas Concert at L.L.Bean Discovery Park. The Town Christmas Tree Lighting & Carol Sing, is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 4.
