Who is that cloaked man? That's the founder of Salem, Roger Conant. Born in 1592, Conant emigrated to Plymouth in 1623. But he was uncomfortable with the strict Pilgrim society and moved to Nantasket just a year later. He eventually founded Salem, with a group of other settlers, in 1626. The statue, which faces the Salem Common, was designed by Henry H. Kitson and dedicated in 1913. |
