A very weak weather system will pass through the area the next 24 hours. This system, while not strong, may allow the atmosphere to produce a few showers. Most of the shower activity, if it occurred will be in the afternoon hours. The showers will be light and do little to alleviate the moderate drought now present over much of the area. The cooler, less dry air over us today means that the high fire danger is a notch lower. However, it is still dangerous out there so be careful if you are burning and no ciggies out the window, that’s how these brush fires often start.
When you are outside this afternoon, you may notice the weather quickly changing from hour to hour. At times the sun will be out and it will feel like a nice spring day. An hour later there may be a sprinkle or shower and then the sun will be back out. These showers will not amount to anything significant and therefore the drought will continue.
Cold to our west
One interesting aspect of the weather was the cold across the center of the country into the Ohio valley this morning. Freeze warnings were up, (area in light blue on this map)
and that is because its actually colder than normal in those areas. Since I don’t live out there I don’t know the nuances of how this cold affected areas, but there could be issues with early crops that had been planted. We run that same risk if we get a hard freeze from here on out. The good news is that the weather looks to warm-up as we head in to the weekend.
Tomorrow and beyond
Thursday looks to also have a lot of clouds and still the chance for these showers in the afternoon. Again, not much in the way of water is expected, but right now I will take anything we can get. I hate to sound like a broken record, but this lack of rain is kinda freaking me out. I can’t ever recall it being so dry so early. If you read this blog regularly, you may remember I have been nervous about this happening since February. The problem is that it becomes increasingly difficult after April to get larger rainstorms. It can happen for sure, the odds just decrease. However, the odds of this winter-spring pattern are also low, so who knows.
Friday and into the weekend look really nice. Sunshine will be with us Friday and Saturday. On Sunday there could be another system that gives us a few light showers. Temperatures over this three day period will be in the 60s with my pick being Saturday. The reason the weather looks nice for Friday and Saturday is that high pressure will move into our area. That blue H on the map (below) is a good weather maker and is heading for New England!
Gardening tip of the week
One of my favorite flowering azaleas is the vaseyi variety. This plant, native to the Carolina area is a reliable early bloomer in the garden and will flower in a shady spot. If you are looking for a great plant for early spring color, check this out. It might be hard to find, but its worth the hunt.
