Weather turns cool and wet for much of this week

Sunday ended up being a great day after the morning clouds moved away and temperatures finally warmed to a respectable 70F over inland areas. At the coast, the sea breeze kept it cool but there was plenty of sunshine. Today will be another fine May day with sunshine and seasonable temperatures in the 60s. Starting tomorrow, a boundary of air masses will stall over the northeast. This boundary will act as the focal point for several periods of showers and steady rain through Thursday.

I think after this week I will be able to stop talking about drought for a while. It looks like 1 to 3 inches of rain will fall this week as a series of systems moves through. There will be breaks in the rain after it starts Tuesday, but the sun will be scarce the next three days. By Friday, clearing will return to the area and if all goes according to my forecast, next weekend, including Mother’s day, looks quite nice.
Take a look at the weather map below. This map is for early Tuesday and shows a storm to our southwest. (that is the L on the map). As the system moves east it will bring rain and cool temperatures will it. There will be a round of rain Tuesday and then a break in the steady rain for late Tuesday and early Wednesday before another round of rain moves into the area for late Wednesday and early Thursday. Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the 50s with a cool wind. On Wednesday and Thursday, milder air will accompany the rain and temperatures will reach the 60s. The mild air also has more moisture so the amount of rain will be higher from the second event.

The radar prediction shows the rain about to move into the area early Tuesday.

You can see in the image that the heaviest rain is to our west early Tuesday but moving towards New England. I don’t expect the rain to begin much before noon Tuesday.
The map below show the total rainfall expectation through early Thursday. Generally, a 1 to 3 inch amount of rain is expected. While the rain should end Thursday morning, I do expect that the day will be cloudy and a few leftover showers could occur. Friday will start a nicer stretch of weather that should last the entire weekend. Sunshine will be abundant over the weekend and temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Picture perfect for Mother’s Day.

Gardening this week
We are just about a week away from being able to put out warm weather crops. I know, that some of you might wait till Memorial Day weekend, but I stopped doing that 20 years ago. Getting a frost that late is highly unusual and a widespread frost isn’t likely from here on out. There are some plants that need warm weather so I hold off planting beans, peppers, and eggplant until later in May. Below is a video showing you what I have planted so far in my own garden.
