Doctor who pleaded guilty to distributing pills blocked from license renewal

A doctor who pleaded guilty in Rhode Island last year to conspiring to distribute prescription drug has lost his right to renew his medical license in Massachusetts, under a Board of Registration in Medicine took disciplinary finalized Wednesday.

Robert Villarreal had been a surgeon at Rhode Island Hospital when he was arrested in August 2011 by the US Drug Enforcement Administration. The 34-year-old from Boston was accused of working with another hospital employee to distribute about 29,000 pills, including oxycodone and amphetamines, through forged prescriptions.

Villarreal pleaded guilty last August to one charge of conspiracy to distribute controlled drugs and is serving a sentence of six months in prison. His Massachusetts medical license expired in October, and the board moved to prohibit him from renewing it again.
