Boston College’s annual 'American Idol'-style singing competition raised $4,500 for the music program at Saint Columbkille Partnership School in Brighton.

BC freshman Caroline Portu was crowned the 2013 “BC Idol,” the university said. Portu was one of 11 Boston College students who vied for the title during the Feb. 28 event, which also showcased the singing and music from students from St. Columbkille.

Among the performers was the St. Columbkille Choir, which got its start from funds raised during a previous BC Idol event.

The annual event is sponsored by BC’s Emerging Leader Program, Student Programs Office and Office of Governmental and Community Affairs, officials said.
