Suicide by numbers

In a typical US high school classroom,it is likely that one boy and two girlshave attempted suicide in the past year. Here are some data specific to 15- to 19-year-olds:

Girls are twice as likely to attempt suicide; boys are five times more likely to complete it.

Typically, girls use pills. Boys use guns.

Altogether in 2002, 1,513 died.

Suicide is the third-leading cause of death.
