The birth of a parenting blog

Whether you're a reader who's been following my column for years or a parent with a newborn, what you'll find in this blog is a common sense, developmental approach to parenting. Simply put, I believe that the more we know about what fuels a child's behavior, the better able we are to respond in a way that feeds into his or her strengths rather than weaknesses, and gives him or her a sense of control rather than a feeling of powerlessness. In the process, that reduces parent-child power struggles and fosters a healthy relationship which, in the end, is what really matters.
That's at the heart of the column I've been writing for -- yikes! -- 19 years. OK, I get to be a little personal in a blog, don't I? I started the column for the Globe when my son was 6-months-old. He's a freshman in college now. You get the picture: I've covered a lot of ground. I also switched to parttime when the column began, and I've never looked back. So my postings will be mainly on Monday, Tuesday & Wed.
