« "Shrek" PSAs off the air, but only temporarily | Main | Unwanted, but not newborn » Thursday, May 17, 2007Consumer alertsMy occassional perusal of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website reveals several toys that have voluntarily been recalled by manufacturers:
By Battat Inc.: 300,000 Parents Magazine Record-A-Voice Toy Cell Phones. There's a metal pin that can fall out and become a choking hazard. By Graco Children's Products, Inc.: 40,000 Soft Blocks Tower Toys. The blocks are on some Baby Einstein Discover and Play Activity Centers. The plastic cover on the blocks can detach, causing a choking hazard.
By Small World Toys: 8,800 IQ Preschool Take-Apart Townhouses. Magnets used to connect the wooden pieces can fall out, posing a hazard if swallowed. If a child were to swallow more than one, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal blockages, which can be fatal. The CPSC also warns about a potential risk of lead exposure from baby bibs with deteriorated, cracked or peeling vinyl surfaces. In a posting yesterday, I mentioned potential toxic poisoning to children from car seats, as measured by HealthyCar.org a project of the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor. The car seats have not been recalled by CPSC and the report does not cite documentation of children becoming sick from exposure. Posted by Barbara Meltz at 05:00 PM
