It was the first really summer-like day yesterday and I was lucky enough to be at the beach. It was also warm enough to be in the water (no, no -- not me), a surprise this early in the season. The bigger surprise of the afternoon, however, was two toddlers who were wearing sunglasses. That's right. Toddlers. Sunglasses. Seems like an oxymoron, doesn't it? Naturally, I chatted up the mother. I told her I didn't know what to be more suprised about: that the children weren't throwing a tantrum over wearing them, or that the glasses were sturdy enough to not fall off while they ran around in the sand and water. The mother shrugged. "Maybe if you start early enough, they just get used to them," she said. The kids were twins. The boy's glasses were blue, the girl's pink. This mother should be a role model for all of us to take sun safety seriously. The Skin Cancer Foundation warns that children's eyes are most susceptible to skin damange. The good news is that it's now possible to find sun glasses made especially for children. The Skin Cancer Foundation also hopes that before you send your child off to camp, you'll find out if the camp is "sun safe." Here's a check list to rate it by. Posted by Barbara Meltz at 05:24 PM
