« On the off chance that your kids sometimes tune you out..... | Main | Obesity and education » Monday, July 23, 2007When you have a new driver...
Your novice teen driver may or may not like the idea, but then again, whose car is it, anyway? The idea of identifying for other drivers that the car in front of it is driven by a student driver sure seems like a good safety precaution to me. Teen driving statistics do not exactly soothe a parent's fears: Teen drivers are nine times more likely to be involved in a fatal car crash than the driving population as a whole, and more than 1,000,000 US teenagers are involved in crashes every year, according to the National Institute for Highway Safety. Driver inexperience is the leading cause of the problem, it says. Something as simple as this magnetic decal, from RookieDriver.net makes other drivers alert to anticipate new driver mistakes. They're not expensive -- $7.95 -- and there's a two-fer deal at the website right now. Here's another suggestion that costs a bit more: Skid School. My colleague, Royal Ford, has been preaching about this for years and when my son reached the driving milestone, I enrolled him. Worth every penny. Posted by Barbara Meltz at 11:08 AM
