Damsels in Distress

Frayed edges? Uneven hems? There's a reason sloppiness is in.

WHAT'S IN: Tweed suits a little too ladylike for your taste? Unfinished edges on collars, cuffs, and hems will take you from staid to frayed this fall. Picture Tippi Hedren at the end of The Birds -- disheveled yet glamorous. While breaking up is hard to do, try thinking of suits as separates. The distressed trend encourages it, making outfits look less formal and more playful. Pair suit jackets with ripped jeans and pencil skirts with form-fitting knits. And forget the pert bow blouses. It's asymmetrical lace tops or rough-textured knits that pass the distress test.

WHO'S WEARING IT: Women who want a hip alternative to an elegant suit and club kids looking for new ways to update denim. Reminder: Tell your dry cleaner the hem is supposed to be uneven, as a well-meaning staffer might unwittingly "fix" it, thinking he is doing you a favor.

WHERE TO FIND IT: Distressed dress can be found in shops across town. Frayed tweed separates and uneven lace tops are available at Stel's, 334 Newbury Street, Boston, 617-262-3348. Kiko has frayed tweed suits and pinstripe skirts with attached slips hanging out; 652 Tremont Street, Boston, 617-247-4200.
