Soft Touch

Old-time shaving techniques are making a comeback.

WHAT'S IN Male grooming is a polite term for men hogging the bathroom. Then again, why shouldn't guys have the same baby-soft skin as the fairer sex? To that end, the traditional barbershop-style wet shave is making quite a comeback. According to the sharp sales staff at Stoddard's, opened in 1800, a lathered badger brush is the key to shaving nirvana, softening and lifting the beard. A variety of handle shapes are designed to fit any man's palm, with a wide choice of razors.

HOW TO DO IT For the best hair-raising experience, Beauty and Main salons suggest prepping the skin with pre-shave oil. Dip a wet badger brush into a bowl of cream or soap, lather up, and then shave with the grain to prevent burn. Finish with a moisturizing balm. Smooooth.

WHERE TO FIND IT At Beauty and Main, 30 Brattle Street, Cambridge, 617-868-7171, and suburban locations; call to attend an "Art of Shaving" night in Cambridge this Thursday. Also at Stoddard's, Copley Place, Boston, 617-536-8688, and The Mall at Chestnut Hill, 617-244-4187.
