How to wear the look

Proper balance is important, especially as baggy pants also make a comeback.

``If you wear a bigger sweater, keep the bottom half of your body clean and sharp with a cigarette pant or a skinny jean," says Nilda Martin, co-owner of Parlor on Washington Street in the South End. A pencil skirt also works well, especially if you cinch the billowy top at your natural waist.

Leggings are a big part of the oversized/baby-doll top trend. But don't pull out your old workout clothes. ``The leggings that are coming out are really modern looking," says Martin. ``They're not as `Lycra' looking. We have a couple [of] pairs that don't suck in the body, they skim it. They have r uching and a button detail." As for length, those that hit the calf are nice with flats. For fall, longer ones will tuck nicely into boots.

Layering is important, but it is an art form. ``You have to pay attention to your body. For example, I'm more petite. For me to do a bigger sweater, I do better with a big cowl neck and a tank top underneath," says Martin . ``People still know I'm tiny, not just wearing this big thing. Whereas if you're taller you can do a long sleeve without getting lost in it." Adding leggings under a dress is another way to dress it down or change the look. ``I grew up in the '80s but I don't feel like I'm channeling Pat Benatar when I do this. It's really cute." Martin also advises to keep the color palette simple and not to over - accessorize. -- TINA CASSIDY
