Dyed and gone to heaven

Fall has more or less arrived, but your hair - in all its brittle, washed-out glory - still looks as if you just emerged

from a chlorinated pool. What to do? We talked to some of the city's hottest stylists to see what the hair trends are this

season, and how you can bring your tresses back from the brink. - LINDA LABAN

JEAN PIERRE COLLIN
THE CARRIAGE HOUSE

33 Church St., Cambridge
617-868-7800.
carriagehousesalon.com

Typical client: "Anyone from Harvard students to died-in-the-wool Cambridge types."

Fall trend: "There is a turn toward a more feminine look. Sleek, detailed cuts. Sophisticated and individual."

Most requested celebrity style: "Tsk! It's not that I don't like Paris Hilton, but anybody can look like her. A woman who is 45 doesn't want to look like Paris Hilton."

Hot colors: "The focus is on red pigments, the spectrum is so huge. Women can look so terrific with chestnut, copper, mahogany. Detailed highlights that bring out the haircut."

Quick tip: "Work with your stylist. Keep it simple. The more you do, the more mistakes you can make, and then the more problems you have."

WILLIAM GEORGE
JAMES JOSEPH SALON

30 Newbury St., 617-266-7222. jamesjosephsalon.com
Typical client: "Professional, tasteful."

Fall trend: "Cuts have become very individual. Poker-straight hair was the last trend that every girl wanted. Consumers are more savvy and they finally understand that not everybody can wear whatever the trend is."

Most requested celebrity style: "Jessica Simpson. There's always an iconic blond and she's it right now. And Gisele. But who doesn't want to look like Gisele?"

Hot colors: "More solid color Away from the stripy highlights. It's about enhancing natural hair rather than fighting what nature gave them."

Quick tip: "It's important to use good treatment products. Natural products are best, they build healthy hair by nourishing it from the inside with organic ingredients."

LEON DE MAGISTRIS
LEON AND CO. OF BELMONT

84 Leonard St., Belmont.
617-484-4777. leonandco.com

Typical client: "Busy working women, aged 25 to 55."

Fall trend: "This summer's bob has softened for fall and winter. It has a more gentle line and more volume. Not so linear."

Most requested celebrity style: "Madonna's, in her new video."

Hot colors: "Platinum blond is going to make a big return, very classic Hollywood. But Boston tends to be conservative, so more warm colors for fall."

Quick tip: "I don't believe in the conditioner you use in the shower. I believe in the conditioner that you leave in. The properties get absorbed. The one you wash out, it goes into the drain. It's a waste."

SANDY POIRER
SHAG

840 Summer St., 617-268-2500. shagboston.com

Typical client: "Edgy. The Shag client is exploring their wilder side and their sexuality."

Fall trend: "Daring. That's the word: daring hair. Really asymmetric, disconnected, influenced by the heavy-duty dance clubs."

Most requested celebrity style: "Fall Out Boy. Posh Spice. Even though she's mainstream her hair is explorative, it does push the envelope."

Hot colors: "Pinks and blues are really strong right now. Random chunks, thrown in, not perfect. Colored extensions are big too."

Quick tip: "Damaged hair? Cut it off. Trim it regularly. It's a form of art - just let it do what it's going to do. Don't force it."

PATRICK MCGINLEY
VIDAL SASSOON

14 Newbury St., fourth floor, 617-536-5496. vidalsassoon.com

Typical client: "Intelligent, versatile, sophisticated, trend-setting, chic."

Fall trend: "There really isn't a strong trend right now. We're still seeing a lot of the asymmetric cuts and versatile cuts with leaner, sleeker shapes, understated elegance. We work with the individual, really."

Most requested celebrity style: "We still get a lot of people wanting the Nicole Richie-style side-swept bangs."

Hot colors: "Lustrous woody or rich wine tones. Blonds are minky, accented with a touch of white. Champagne tones are emphasized with dove gray and deeper graphite."

Quick tip: "In-salon conditioning treatments. Our time-saving 'treatment cut' applies a treatment while the hair is being cut. It lasts about four weeks."

JEFFREY LYLE
EMERGE SPA AND SALON

275 Newbury St., 617-437-0006. emergespasalon.com

Typical client: "Women, 30s on up. Elegant, sophisticated."

Fall trend: "Long glamorous hair. The weight comes from the bottom and a deep side part gives it that strong look. The waves starting from the eye down. It's almost like that 1940s look."

Most requested celebrity style: "Posh Spice. As a stylist, we appreciate women like that because it shows other women that you can do different things and have fun."

Hot colors: "I'm still doing blond all the time. Blonds don't change, maybe lighter in the summer. But blonds are steady, it's a lifestyle to them."

Quick tip: "If you use a good treatment product regularly, then your hair is strengthened. Past damage is reversed and it's better protected from further damage."
