Creative solutions for rebuilding bodies
The best rehabilitation hospital in New England now has centers all over Boston
As one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the U.S., Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network provides comprehensive rehabilitation and complex medical management services. A teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, Spaulding is the only rehabilitation hospital in New England which, since 1995, has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report in its Best Hospitals issue. Spaulding ranked as the eighth best rehabilitation hospital in the nation in the magazine's July 2004 issue.
The Spaulding Network's 296-bed main campus facility is the anchor of the network, which reaches from Framingham to Braintree. The Network's newest outpatient center is in Cambridge, on the Youville Hospital campus. In addition to Cambridge, Spaulding outpatient centers are located throughout the Boston area-at the Nashua Street campus, in Downtown Crossing (Boston), Braintree,
Brighton, Medford, Wellesley, and Framingham. All of Spaulding's outpatient centers offer a complete spectrum of rehabilitation therapies. Spaulding's interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation combines highly qualified, caring professionals with state-of-the-art technologies and treatment techniques. Its multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams comprise nurses, therapists, and physicians who can treat the complex medical problems often associated with a patient's principal condition.
Canoe and windsurf programs
Alternative and complimentary therapies are employed, including the Charles H. Weingarten Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program. This program, endowed by the wife of a former Spaulding physician, is a unique therapeutic approach to rehabilitation (using adapted equipment) where patients enjoy activities such as bicycling, canoeing, wall climbing, windsurfing, kayaking, tennis, indoor rowing, and other sports. Housed at Spaulding's Nashua Street campus, the program offers activities that take place right in the hospital's back yard, along the Charles River.
Seven-year old Nicholas, one of the hospital's pediatric patients who has cerebral palsy, experienced the adaptive sports and recreation program for the first time this summer. By getting kids and adults back into everyday activities, or even activities they've never tried, the hospital can address their rehabilitative needs as well as provide social stimuli and confidence-building experiences.
Spaulding's outpatient site in Framingham is home to the International Rehabilitation Center for Polio.
This center offers a team of medical and rehabilitation professionals with extensive training and experience in managing problems people may be having as they age with polio. Comprehensive evaluation and treatment services are designed for people who contracted polio many years ago and are now experiencing new problems. The clinic also helps polio survivors, currently symptom free, who want to prevent further disability in the future. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network's medical staff includes more than 150 full- and part-time physicians representing 30 medical specialties. They collaborate closely with experienced rehabilitation nurses and more than 200 physical, occupational, speech-language, and recreational therapists.
The hospital offers more than 15 specialty rehabilitation programs for all ages. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is a member of the Partners HealthCare Family and Partners Continuing Care, and proud to be recognized as the best rehabilitation hospital in all of New England, and the official rehabilitation hospital of the New England Patriots and the New England Revolution.
