2 diagnosed with typhoid fever in Romania

CLUJ, Romania --Two children have been diagnosed with typhoid fever, and eight children and adults are hospitalized under medical observation for the disease in northern Romania, health authorities said Saturday.

Two children, aged 4 and 18, were hospitalized in the city of Targu Mures earlier this week. Tests confirmed Friday they had typhoid fever, local health official Silviu Morariu said.

The eight who are under observation are mainly children. They were hospitalized Friday in the northern town of Gheorgheni and are in isolation, epidemiologist Eva Veres said.

All 10 are from the northern village of Hodos and live in the same apartment building, which has no running water. They get water from a nearby well, Morariu said.

Symptoms of typhoid include fever, rash, stomach ache, slowed pulse, enlarged spleen and delirium. Serious, sometimes fatal complications can develop. The disease can pass from one person to another, mainly through contaminated water and food.
