A product is born
Product design is all about finding new ways to improve the stuff of everyday life -- from the ice tongs that fumble the ice cubes to the cat litter boxes that won't keep the litter inside. Here's how one local design firm, Vessel, attacked a longstanding problem that called for innovation:
1 The problem The need to invent a portable light for late-night trips around the house.
2 The challenge Flashlights (ugly!) tend to get stashed in drawers and forgotten, and night lights aren't portable.
3 The requirements Must be easy to find in the dark. Must enhance the home's decor. Must illuminate during power failures.
4 The strategy Marry the concept of electric night lights with the old-fashioned practice of carrying a candle through a dark house.
5 The solution The Guardian, a portable lamp that gives off the ambient glow of a candle. It loops over a charger that plugs into a wall socket, and it illuminates automatically during power failures. Sleek, minimalist, cool. ![]()
