Harvard University administrators surreptitiously monitored the e-mail addresses of 16 deans during the fall of 2012, the Globe found.

In a statement including a partial apology, the university said the search was prompted by an investigation into a possible media leak involving the school’s cheating scandal.

Harvard faculty members expressed shock, dismay, and anger following the Globe’s report.
