John Silber’s passionate, opinionated legacy

3/28/1972 Boston University President John R. Silber is determined to wait-out the shouting of students before addressing them at Marsh Plaza. They were protesting military recruiting at Boston University. Thirty-three persons were arrested when police were called to break up a similar but more serious demonstration.

The former Boston University president had a knack for butting heads with opponents. Silber was proudly elitist and forthright in his traditionalism. He loved to skewer welfare, feminism, bilingual education, and anything else he considered a liberal piety.
