Closed doors in 2012 made way for new beginnings to look forward to in 2013. Here are a few new spots anticipated to open in the upcoming year.

New York-based supermarket sensation Wegmans is pushing ahead with plans for its second big store in Massachusetts and Mayor Menino just announced that the store will be moving to the Landmark Center in theFenway.

Scheduled to open in 2013, the sprawling supermarket will include, among other features, a 15,000-square-foot market cafe that Wegmans hopes will become a magnet for office workers on their lunch hour, and even for residents interested in a casual dinner as well

The former Chestnut Hill Shopping Center — recently renamed "The Street" — is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013.

Plans call for the first Shake Shack in Massachusetts, Showcase Super Lux featuring Davio’s Cucina, The Sports Club/LA, Polarn O. Pyret, Pottery Barn, lululemon athletica, Pinkberry, Del Frisco’s, Bernard’s, Treat Cupcake Bar, and many others soon to be announced.

Capital One bank plans to open its first branch offices — at least six — in the Boston area starting in late 2013 to promote its growing online banking division. But the McLean, Va., bank says they won’t be traditional branches with teller lines and safe-deposit boxes. Instead, they’ll be sleek marketing offices, called “cafes,” that will serve up coffee and other amenities. If they are anything like cafes in other cities, they will include free wireless Internet access, flat-screen televisions, and comfy furniture for hanging out.

A slew of new businesses and restaurants are estimated to open in 2013 around the Innovation District in South Boston. Famed restaurateurs like Mario Batali and Ming Tsai announced plans to open restaurants in the Fort Point area while local businessmen said they plan to open a comedy club by the waterfront.

Expect more places to pick up coffee in 2013. Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks announced major expansion plans.

Starbucks announced that they would open up 1,500 cafes in the country over the next five years. The Seattle-based company even plans to open a location in South Boston next to the Broadway MBTA stop.

Clinics offering marijuana are anticipated to open in various town across Massachusetts following voter’s approval legalizing medical use of the drug.

CannaMed, a California-based company, plans to open a dispensary in Framingham in mid-December 2012. The company also plans to continue expanding in Massachusetts, with its sights set on Boston for 2013.

The Borders Bookstore on Washington Street closed in 2011 but in 2013, the expansive property will be reopened as a Walgreens that features fresh food, sushi and salons.

The grocery store is among many other planned openings in 2013 around Downtown Crossing.

A 40,000-square-foot skate park is planned to open under the Leonard P. Zakim Bridge after a number of setbacks.

The Charles River Skatepark is expected to draw not only skateboarders from around the region, but also BMX riders and in-line skaters.

In 2013, the ultimate modern burger joint comes to Chestnut Hill: the New York-born Shake Shack, legendary for its long lines.

A two-level Nordstrom Rack will open in Boston’s Back Bay in the spring of 2013. With about 38,000 square feet of space, the store will occupy the space left by Filene’s Basement, which filed for bankruptcy. The space along and around Newbury Street has undergone many changes.

More towns around Boston are drafting ordinances to allow food trucks to serve customers. Brookline, Newton, and Somerville are among the latest towns to extend or approve spots for mobile food vendors.

Also, in 2013, several food trucks like Bon Me and Momogoose plan to open brick-and-mortar restaurants in Kendall Square and by South Station, respectively.

New J.P. Licks stores are scheduled to open on Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, Lynnfield, and Somerville.

Whole Foods will open in six new locations by the fall of 2013: South Weymouth, Arlington, Charlestown, Brookline, Melrose, and Beacon Street in Somerville.

Boston University plans to revamp its sports facilities by fall 2013. The project includes building a 110,000-square-foot athletic and recreational field and a 350-space parking garage underneath the field on property the school owns along the western edge of its campus in Allston. The new recreational field will be called New Balance Field and will be housed right next to the current Nickerson Field.

By summer 2013, Boston-area children will ride on a carousel designed with seals, squirrels, even skunks, if all goes according to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy’s plan.

Cambridge is seeking applicants to run pedicab companies in the city for eight months in a pilot program scheduled to begin March 2013.

The MBTA has many projects underway that commuters will notice in 2013.

The Salem Commuter Rail station will undergo a complete overhaul .The project essentially amounts to construction of the new 715-space parking garage, an indoor waiting area, elevated track, and other amenities.

The JFK/UMass Station, which already has more than 10 security cameras, will be the first MBTA station to install additional cameras. The upgrades and should be completed by late spring/early summer 2013. The scope of the work also encompasses stations further up the line, including the Charles/MGH Station, Harvard Square Station, Kendall Station, and Porter Station.

Six Flags New England plans to add Bonzai Pipelines, a 65-foot tall water-slide complex featuring six drop hatch slides, to its theme park in Agawam in spring 2013.

In spring 2013, Bostonians will have the chance to chill at a new nightlife spot that’s literally made of ice. Frost Ice Bar will be the first indoor ice bar in New England, and will feature a lounge decked out with ice-sculpted interiors.

If all goes according to plans by Braintree town officials, the Petersen Pool and Ice Skating Rink planned for Braintree High School could be operating by September 2013.

Marblehead All-Sports Foundation plans to make improvement to the town’s Piper Field. The projected plans include a new track, additional turf fields, and general improvements to the existing grass playing fields. The two- to three-month field construction effort will start June 2013.
