12 AMAZING ANIMAL STORIES OF 2012

When 19 abused miniature horses were recovered from a West Boylston farm in March, the veterinary team at MSPCA-Nevin Farm doubted they could provide the required care, said Rob Halpin, director of public relations at MSPCA-Angell. The horses suffered from malnutrition, dental disease, external parasites and overgrown hooves.
“This is one of the saddest rescues we’ve experienced in quite a while, with such a large number of animals in such desperate condition,” said Melissa Ghareeb, of MSPCA-Nevins Farm, in a news release. “Fortunately, we and Animal Rescue League arrived in time to remove the horses from these deplorable conditions and begin the treatment they’ll need as we ready them for their new lives.”
The volunteer efforts of local farriers and equine dentists set the horses on the path to recovery and eventually, adoption.
