New England in brief
BOSTON
Officials at the state Department of Public Health reported yesterday that they have detected more mosquitoes in Plymouth County carrying the Eastern equine encephalitis virus. The mosquitoes were captured in Halifax Wednesday. Officials had discovered mosquitoes infected with the EEE virus in nearby Lakeville Monday. There have been 14 cases of Eastern equine encephalitis in the state in the last six years, with six of those lethal, but none since 2008, officials said. “The risk will increase from now through the early fall,’’ said Dr. Al DeMaria, the state epidemiologist. “The greater the number of infected mosquitoes, the greater the risk to people, so preventing mosquito bites becomes more important.’’Lawyer withdraws as candidate for judge
An Arlington attorney criticized for failing to disclose donations he made to two embattled politicians has withdrawn his candidacy to be a judge. David Aptaker sent a letter to Governor Deval Patrick yesterday stating that “an honest mistake on my part has become too much of a distraction in the approval process.’’ Patrick had nominated him to be an associate justice of the Middlesex Family and Probate Court. Aptaker donated $350 to the former Middlesex register of probate, John Buonomo, and $200 to a former state senator, James Marzilli. Buonomo has since been convicted of theft, and Marzilli resigned after being charged with sexual assault. (AP)Chelsea man accused of torturing wife
A Chelsea man was arraigned yesterday on charges that he beat and tortured his pregnant wife over a five-day period in April, the office of Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. Jose Jobson, 27, pleaded not guilty in Suffolk Superior Court to charges including armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, and kidnapping, Conley’s office said. Jobson was ordered held without bail and is due back in court on Aug. 11. Authorities accuse Jobson of punching, burning, and slashing his 23-year-old wife with knives and razors. Jobson thought that his wife, who was eight months pregnant at the time of the alleged assaults, had been cheating on him, Conley’s office said. Jobson later kidnapped his three children and threatened to kill them, authorities allege, and assaulted several police officers who arrested him April 18.Man convicted of raping 14-year-old girl
A Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted a 40-year-old man yesterday of raping a 14-year-old girl while he was a patient and she was working as a volunteer at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in 2008, Suffolk prosecutors said. Vernon Thompson, 40, is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday afternoon, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said. His lawyer, Joan Stanley, had argued that Thompson was mentally ill at the time of the assault.Scientist indicted in trade secrets case
A scientist who works at a Marlborough biofuel company has been indicted in Indiana on 12 counts of theft and attempted theft of trade secrets to benefit a foreign government or instrumentality and five counts of interstate and foreign transportation of stolen property, according to documents unsealed yesterday in US District Court in Boston. Kexue Huang, 45, of Westborough has been jailed without bail since FBI agents arrested him Tuesday. It is unclear what secrets Huang, who previously lived in Indiana, is accused of stealing and for whom, because the indictment against him remains under seal. Huang has been employed by Qteros Inc. in Marlborough for about a year, according to a company spokeswoman. She said the Indiana indictment is not related to his work at Qteros.CAMBRIDGE
Harvard rescinds degree it gave to spy
Harvard University has revoked a degree in public administration it gave to a man who turned out to be a Russian spy living under a stolen Canadian identity. Andrey Bezrukov, who went by the name of Donald Heathfield while in the United States, was one of 10 Russian agents arrested June 27 and deported as part of a spy swap with Moscow. Harvard spokesman Doug Gavel said yesterday that the John F. Kennedy School of Government stripped Bezrukov of the degree for violating its policy on misrepresentation in his application.
