William Hickling Prescott
The American historian lived at 55 Beacon St. (now a museum) on land formerly owned by John Singleton Copley.
Prescott was one of the first historians to write about the Spanish Empire. He dedicated his life to literature after being blinded in one eye by a crust of bread thrown at Harvard.
His grandfather was the famous colonel in the Revolutionary War who commanded his forces at the Battle of Bunker HIll: "Do not fire until you see the whites of their eyes."
