Famous folks from Beacon Hill

Robert Gould Shaw The colonel in charge of the first all-black 54th Regiment grew up in West Roxbury but his memorial stands on Beacon Hill. There, a monument depicting him and the men of the 54th Regiment can be found across the street from the State House. It shows the regiment marching down Beacon Street on May 28, 1863, as they left Boston to head south. Shaw was shot in the heart and killed during battle at Fort Wagner in Charleston, S.C. He was stripped and buried with his fallen troops in a trench outside the fort. Shaw's family stated he would have considered it an honor.
