Famous figures from Dorchester
John 'Mad Jack' Percival
The Navy captain was born in Barnstable but he called Meeting House Hill in Dorchester his home.
When he first started sailing as a cabin boy, his ship was overtaken by British Royal Marines. Percival, refusing the possibility of enslavement, escaped by holding a pistol to a sentry's head.
Nicknamed because of his fiery temper, "Mad Jack" took the USS Constitution on its only around-the-world cruise while fighting pirates and drew the attention of writers Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville.
