A tour of the Boston Harbor Islands

Two islands are accessible by ferry from Long Wharf, just across Atlantic Avenue from the new pavilion. The 39-acre Georges Island is the site of Fort Warren, built to defend Boston Harbor and used as a military training camp and as a Civil War prison. The red brick visitors’ center seen here was built in 1906 and used for storage of mines that were put in the harbor for defense. The lower, open structure to the left holds a Jasper White’s Summer Shack.
