Controversy over MBTA fare hikes, cutbacks

Activists in wheelchairs chanted, 'We can't ride, you can't drive' as they blocked traffic in front of the State House to protest MBTA fare hikes. The cost of a single fare on MBTA service for the disabled on The Ride will rise from $2 to $4 for most riders in July. Outside the MBTA service area, the cost will increase to $5. Vehicles were temporarily diverted while police used bolt cutters to disconnect the chained protesters. The crowd dispersed when a prisoner transport van arrived at the scene.
