East Boston's immigration station

Sometimes referred to as 'Boston's Ellis Island,' the East Boston immigration station is slated to be torn down in a matter of weeks. Some worry that a piece of Boston's rich history will be lost. Scroll through to see the station through the years. The station operated from 1920 to 1954 as the region’s immigration hub. Inspectors processed immigrants at steamship docks and only brought to the immigration station those who required a secondary interview or had issues with their paperwork or other problems, according to Marian L. Smith, a long-time historian for the federal immigration service.
