Boston's historic May Day celebrations

This year Simmons College will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of their oldest tradition, May Day. May Day is historically a celebration of spring on the first day of May. However, at Simmons it is also a tradition to honor the graduating seniors. Sophomores serenade the seniors at the break of dawn with pots, pans, and noisemakers. Festivities include a maypole dance at dawn, tree planting, and a strawberry shortcake breakfast. Students perform the May Day dance around the May Pole at the very first Simmons celebration in 1912.
