Dogs from all over New England were in the South End over the weekend to show off their aerobatic abilities at DockDogs, a pet competition held at the Red Dog Pet Resort and Spa.

Dogs from all over New England were in the South End over the weekend to show off their aerobatic abilities at DockDogs, a pet competition held at the Red Dog Pet Resort and Spa.

Competing in the categories of Big Air, Speed Retrieve, and the Extreme Vertical, participating dogs put it all on the line to see who could take away the gold over the weekend.

Growing in popularity, the international canine sport sees over 40,000 participants ever year, with the South Boston event drawing close to 150 participants a day, according to organizers.

The first official DockDogs competition was held in 1999 and according to Max Dewire, the competition’s MC, “It’s all about having fun with your dog.”

Leaping into the pool, dogs tested their stuff in the Big Air competition Saturday.

A variety of breeds take part in the games, but Labradors, Retrievers, and Belgian Shepard Malinois tend to be the most popular.

During the Big Air competition dogs sprinted down the AstroTurf ramp, leaping into the water after their favorite toy.

A variety of techniques are used to coax the dogs into the water, some though need a little extra encouragement.

Saturday’s competition saw both amateur and veterans turn out, with some dogs leaping more than 20-feet into the water.

With the hot temperatures over the weekend, not every dog wanted to get out of the water.

Spectators streamed in and out Saturday to watch the competition. Some even brought their own dogs.
