James 'Whitey' Bulger Probably the most notorious Boston gangster, James Bulger was born in 1929 to Irish immigrant parents living in Dorchester and grew up in South Boston. His shock of platinum-blond hair earned him the nickname 'Whitey.' He worked hand-in-hand with FBI agents, ratting out his mob rivals in exchange for protection. When the partnership unraveled, he disappeared. Wanted for 19 murders, he was a fugitive for 16 years before he was captured in Southern California in June.
