Saul Bellow
The Nobel laureate lived in Brookline. He wrote more than two dozen novels, short stories, plays, and nonfiction works. He started living in Boston in 1993 when he taught for Boston University.
He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his book, "Humbold's Gift."
''The Pulitzer is for the birds," said Humboldt, insistently immune to the prize his story would take. ''For the pullets. It's just a dummy newspaper publicity award given by crooks and illiterates. You become a walking Pulitzer ad, so even when you croak the first words of the obituary are Pulitzer prize-winner passes."
