HOPKINTON — Caliper Life Sciences Inc., which makes technologies used for drug development, said yesterday that it is buying privately held Cambridge Research & Instrumentation Inc. for about $20 million in a cash-and-stock deal.

Caliper will issue about $10.5 million in stock and pay $7.5 million in cash. It will also assume about $2 million in debt.

Cambridge Research & Instrumentation’s revenue is expected to be about $12 million in 2010.

Caliper said Cambridge Research & Instrumentation’s analysis systems will help the company expand its life-sciences portfolio.
