Diverse origins Ralph Inman purchased the land in the 1700s. The neighborhood was developed by businessmen seeking to capitalize on a toll road between Boston and Cambridge across the Charles River around 1809. The neighborhood started out predominantly Irish, but a wave of immigrants in the first half of the 20th century brought in a diverse mix of Russian, Italian, Armenian, and Portuguese. The backgrounds of the residents are reflected in many of the stores and restaurants still in Inman Square today. Pictured: Inman Square in 1890.
