A FOCUS ON AREA SQUARES
Legal Sea Foods
The widespread seafood restaurant chain got its start in Inman Square. Legal Cash Market was opened by Harry Berkowitz in 1904 as a grocery store that accepted legal, government-issued cash stamps. In the '40s, Harry's son George added a fish counter and in the '50s, he added a fish market next door. The name evolved to Legal Fish Market. In 1968, Harriet Berkowitz pushed the store to expand next door to open a restaurant. It served food family-style, with picnic tables and paper plates.
