Milestones, landmarks, changes at Inman Sq.
A FOCUS ON AREA SQUARES
It wasn't a large theater, but it was a common place for locals to go for a cheap matinee on Saturdays. The Theatre (now the East Cambridge Savings Bank) got movies a little later than other Boston houses. "They used to have girl ushers, real tough girls. They'd go around with a flashlight, and if they saw a little kid in one chair, they'd flash the light, and say, "Come on in there, two in a seat." Then the kid would have to move, two in a seat, to fill up the place," said Mary McKenna in the book, "From the Heart of Cambridge."
The Inman Theatre, photographed in the 1930s, was located at 1318 Cambridge St.
