Hawthorne was born in Salem, where his ancestor was a judge in the notorious witch trials. Hawthorne eventually called Concord home with his wife Sophia at the Old Manse, now a museum.
His literary work focused on the complexities of the Puritan philosophy. He had to leave Salem after writing "The Scarlet Letter."
If I escape town without being tarred and feathered, Hawthorne later wrote to a friend, I shall consider it good luck.
