Swimming long distances in open waters, James Jackson Doty braved Boston Harbor’s filthiest tides in the 1970s. He also swam 23 miles around Cape Ann, raced across New Hampshire lakes, and inspired scores of others to match themselves against the sea. He launched the New England Marathon Swimming Association in 1978, was a past president of the L Street Brownies swim club, and was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2002.
