Andover again is team making waves
Five days after the Acton-Boxboro girls’ swimmers knocked off defending state champion Chelmsford, the Colonials were stunned themselves, suffering their first loss of the season, 105-75, to Andover yesterday.
The Golden Warriors, who are undefeated in the Merrimack Valley Conference, now have the state title in their crosshairs again after not winning in 2008 for the first time in 10 years.
“You have to have depth to beat Acton-Boxboro,’’ Golden Warriors coach Marilyn Fitzgerald said. “And that’s what we had. We have a very well-balanced team.’’
Monica Patterson (1:58.70) and Sam Hall (2:03.91) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, and freshman Maggie D’Innocenzo, the sister of last year’s Division 1 Male Swimmer of the Year Nick D’Innocenzo, won the 200 individual medley in 2:09.00 and the 100 backstroke in 59:81.
Sophomore Rachel Moore, a butterfly and backstroke specialist, won two freestyle sprints, the 50 and 100, against A-B’s top sprinter, Zoey Judd. D’Innocenzo, Moore, Emma Cammann, and Ashley Korsberg swam what Fitzgerald believes is the fastest time in the 200 medley relay in the state this year, a 1:52.93.
Hingham 3, North Quincy 0 - Brett Canepa had a goal and an assist for the Harbormen while Terence Morrissey and Noah Ellis each scored a goal.
Central Catholic 3, Billerica 0 - Central Catholic clinched the Merrimack Valley Conference title with a record of 9-0-2.
Canton 5, Foxborough 2 - Freshman forward Lauren Berman scored three goals for the Bulldogs and senior forward Kelsey Rausch added two goals and an assist.
Whitman-Hanson 24, Hingham 35 - Whitman-Hanson’s Tyler Sullivan placed first in 15:40. He was followed by Hingham’s Mike McConbille (15:50) and Whitman-Hanson’s Pat Ryan (15:55).
Weymouth 15, Natick 49 - Senior Cody Crawford celebrated his birthday by winning the race for the Wildcats in 14:58.
Weymouth 16, Natick 48 - The Wildcats took the top four spots, led by Bridget Jaklitsch’s time of 17:29 at Wampatuck State Park’s 2.8-mile course.
