CUTS FOR A CAUSE
James Joseph Salon is teaming up with Animal Umbrella, a no-kill cat shelter in Revere, for a Cut-a-Thon at the salon on Nov. 8 from noon to 5 p.m. For $50, you can get your locks trimmed (cuts at the salon are normally $65-$105), while all proceeds are donated to the shelter. There will be raffles for goodies including Banana Republic and Ann Taylor LOFT gift cards and a James Joseph Salon gift certificate. Mention the Cut-a-Thon when you call to book an appointment. James Joseph Salon is at 30 Newbury St., Boston, 617-266-7222. www.jamesjosephsalon.com. Find more information about the fund-raiser at www.animalumbrella.org.PICTURE THE DISCOUNTS
Whether you’re a natural with a camera or have trouble distinguishing the shutter release from the power button, it may be worth heading to Hunt’s Photo and Video this weekend for its annual show, demo, and sale. The Melrose store will have demos and free workshops tonight until Sunday (register at www.huntsphotoandvideo.com; space is limited), and all locations will have many cameras, camcorders, accessories, software, and more marked down from 5 percent to 50 percent or more tomorrow through Sunday. Hunt’s Photo and Video is at 100 Main St., Melrose, 781-662-8822. Find all other locations at www.huntsphotoandvideo.com.MAKING EXCHANGE
When we heard about the recently opened Buffalo Exchange, where folks can trade in well-maintained duds for cash or store credit, we figured the selection would be small: How much local loot could one store amass in a few weeks? Clearly, we were wrong. The racks, which blend lower-end and higher-end, contemporary and vintage, are robust. (The store opened with inventory from other Buffalo Exchanges - there are locations in 14 states.) Prices are good (we spotted True Religion jeans for $55 and a J. Crew lambswool sweater for $18), and the wares, from what we could see, are pristine. Fun shoes, too. Buffalo Exchange is at 238 Elm St., Somerville, 617-629-5383. www.buffaloexchange.comWARM UP TO SAVINGS
It was hard for us to imagine slipping into a winter coat when they first appeared in stores, but now - ever so grudgingly - we’re mentally prepared. Gia B. is taking 20 percent off its down coats and vests tomorrow and Saturday. We’re talking about sleek, ultra-warm numbers in white, black, and mauve. (They’re more flattering than typical puffers.) The vests are normally $154 (that’s $123.20 on sale), and coats range from $338-$468 ($270.40-$374.40 with the discount). Gia B. is at the Derby Street Shoppes, Suite 131, Hingham, 781-749-5510. www.giaboutique.netDEALS ON DENIM
Chrislee in Needham is taking 15 percent off its denim next Tuesday to next Saturday. The boutique carries a good variety of Hudson and Big Star jeans (originally around $150-$190 and $78-$148, respectively); Miss Me ($98); William Rast (around $200-$220); and Antik and Taverniti So (both $175-$250). Check out the 70 percent-off rack for good finds among past season sweaters, tops, and cocktail dresses, populated by the likes of Vivienne Tam, Odd Molly, and Tracy Reese. Chrislee is at 1110 Great Plain Ave., Needham, 781-453-4073. www.chrisleeboutique.com Got an idea for Bargain Bin? Send it to bargainbin@globe.com. ![]()
