The state Department of Environmental Protection has accepted a plan submitted by the city of Malden to rid Pine Banks Park of low-level contaminants found in a wooded area of a playing field. The 100-acre park, located in Malden and Melrose, is used for school and recreational sports. Elevated levels of lead, chromium, and arsenic were found in soil tested from a wooded area that was once the site of a burn dump on the Malden portion of the land. The cleanup plan involves capping the area with an impermeable barrier covered with 3 feet of clean fill. “We’ve reviewed the plan and will be following up to make sure it’s completed,’’ said Joe Ferson, a DEP spokesman.
