Thurber barely beats the clock, lifts Belmont
Laura Thurber scored with two seconds left in overtime off a corner kick from Claire Mackevicius, giving Belmont a 2-1 home win over Pentucket in the opening round of the Division 2 North girls’ soccer tournament yesterday.
Pentucket took the lead in the second half, but Mackevicius scored 21 seconds later to knot the game, 1-1. The Marauders advance to play third-seeded Wayland tomorrow.
MIAA North Division 1
Masconomet 7, Medford 1 - Senior midfielder Lucy Gildein (two goals, one assist) upped her season goal tally to 18 and juniors Amy Griffith and Kaitlin Sampson each had a goal and an assist.
Central Catholic 2, Lowell 0 - Senior captain Rachel Bourque, who missed a month this season because of an injury, scored both goals for the Red Raiders.
Lincoln-Sudbury 2, North Andover 0 - Senior midfielder Elizabeth Newman scored early in the first half off a corner kick, and junior Beanie Gilroy added a second-half goal.
MIAA North Division 2
Bishop Fenwick 3, North Reading 2 - Kristin Verrette scored two goals in regulation, then had the winning goal in the penalty-kick round for the Crusaders.
MIAA North Division 3
North Shore 1, Mystic Valley 0 - Freshman Kourtney Kellard scored the game’s only goal with an assist by junior Jasmine Nieves.
Shawsheen 2, Winthrop 0 - Senior midfielder Jenna Zechner, the team’s captain, scored both goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenn Curtis stopped 15 shots and earned her 12th shutout.
Austin Prep 1, North Shore 0 - Junior midfielder Brad Rivoto scored the game’s lone goal with 15 minutes remaining and goalkeeper Anthony Benisco earned the shutout for the Cougars.
MIAA South Division 1
Catholic Memorial 2, Weymouth 1 - Senior Will Donovan scored the first goal for the Knights, and senior Sean Steinberg had a goal and an assist for CM.
MIAA South Division 2
Canton 3, Bishop Stang 0 - Freshman Michael Denehy, junior Ramon Ambrosio, and sophomore Matt Kelly scored to lead the Bulldogs.
Hingham 3, Holliston 2 - Brett Canepa scored twice and Terence Morrissey added another for the Harbormen.
MIAA South Division 3
Hanover 2, Seekonk 1 - Five minutes into the second half, freshman forward Dylan Griffin came in to score the winning goal.
MIAA North Division 1
Cambridge 2, Peabody 0 - Steven Depina and Pouchy Guerrier scored and Oliver McNeely recorded the shutout for the Falcons.
Hopkinton 1, Duxbury 0 - Mallory Bannon’s second-half goal propelled the Hillers.

Marian 27, Lowell Catholic 14 - Mike del La Femina set a Marian record with a 99-yard scoring run and finished with more than 200 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.![]()
