Sandwich trips Boxers
After three weather-related cancellations this season, the No. 2 Sandwich boys’ soccer team finally got a chance to face Brockton, its biggest test of the season.
The Blue Knights passed with flying colors.
Zac Sprague beat the Brockton goalkeeper eight seconds into the first half, and Dallas Donovan scored an insurance goal six minutes into the second half to spark a 2-1 victory over the Boxers yesterday in Sandwich.
“It was our best effort of the year,’’ Blue Knights coach Ted Tedeschi said. “It was a good brand of soccer.’’
Peter Alvarenga, the Atlantic Coast’s leading scorer with 20 goals, assisted on Sprague’s tally.
“It was huge to get the first goal, a big lift,’’ Tedeschi said.
“I thought they really came to play and step up to the opposition and I relaxed watching them play.’’
Brockton scored late in the second half on a penalty kick by Joel Lobo.
But the defensive play of Sandwich’s Ben Clabault and goalkeeper Kyle Van Cleef helped keep the Boxers at bay.
