Fall 2010 - Mike Petrides starts his fourth season as Medford High’s boys’ soccer coach. Mustangs wins the Greater Boston League title before losing in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 North tournament and finish 14-3-5 overall.

April 27, 2011 - Medford High Headmaster Paul H. Krueger sends Petrides a letter stating he will not be rehired. As reasons, Krueger says Petrides failed to control his bench in a 2008 game against Malden Catholic and a 2010 game against Boston College High School. He also said the coach improperly removed nets from a practice field at the school.

July 12 - Team captains learn of Petrides’ dismissal, and go to Medford City Council meeting to plead for their coach’s reinstatement.

July 18 - Krueger meets with team captains and players in a private meeting at the school to explain his decision.

July 19 - Krueger sends team captains a letter stating “I have not altered my decision to replace the coach.’’

July 25 - Captains and other players go to the Medford School Committee meeting to make another public plea to reinstate Petrides. Players threaten to boycott the season. School Committee, with Mayor Michael McGlynn as chairman, votes 7-0 to recommend Krueger reinstate Petrides.

July 30 - After several meetings with other school officials, Krueger, at a press conference in McGlynn’s office, announces that he will reinstate Petrides. “I have chosen to hold as priorities the cohesiveness and overall long-term interests of Medford High School and the Medford community,’’ he says.

Aug. 25 - Soccer practice starts, with Petrides entering his fifth season as head coach.

Sept. 9 - Mustangs open with a 4-1 win over GBL archrival Somerville.

Oct. 29 - Mustangs end the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Cambridge, earning them a share of the GBL title and an overall record of 12-2-4.

Nov. 5 - Mustangs beat Chelmsford, 1-0, in the first round of the North Division 1 tournament.

Nov. 9 - Mustangs upset second-seeded Lincoln-Sudbury, 2-1, in overtime, in quarterfinals.

Nov. 11 - Mustangs lose to Masconoment, 1-0, in double overtime, to end their season 14-3-4.
