“Mad Men’’ silver fox and Newton-native John Slattery has long provided the comic spark in the show’s generally dour tone with his turn as ad exec Roger Sterling. This week he followed in castmate Jon Hamm’s footsteps with a guest spot on NBC’s “30 Rock’’ — proving those comedy chops are legit. Playing a wacko Rhode Island congressional candidate and local paintball facility owner, Slattery sent up some of the recent election season’s more, shall we say, colorful characters. “As God is my witness, we will build casinos on the moon,’’ he promises voters. If nothing else, Slattery, who went to high school in Needham, proved more adept with the regional accent than previous guest star Julianne Moore’s oversize effort.
